Nicholas

March 17, 2007 - Nicholas was adopted by Chris & Jana and their canine crew today.

If they could only talk & tell us the truth....Nicholas is a very sweet young man who suffers with a bum leg injury caused by a human & left to heal on its own. We don't really know the truth as to what transpired that left this poor boy in the condition he is in, but he doesn't hold that against anyone. In fact, he plays hard & keeps up with 2 males Rott's who are both full grown & twice his size.  Nicholas is very people focused and is often referred to as "velcro". He would definately benefit from a class in obedience...he is a gentle loving boy.

Nicholas has been seen by two orthopedic vets and will have surgery in mid-February either to remove the leg or re-structure the leg. The latter is optimal, but its chances of success are not as good. We are evaluating of our options.

Either way, he will make someone a very special friend. Nicholas is a wonderful boy who will do well in most households. He loves the company of other dogs and people. Please fill out our adoption application if you are interested in any of our dogs

Nicholas is sponsored by donations to the Mikie's Fund, and by Larrissa Sandberg, Dennis Burke, Samantha Dunne, Sharon Kelsey, Kristine's Mom and Christine Patanaude. Sponsor Nicholas

Three orthopedic veterinary consultations later, it was decided that Nicholas had to lose the leg. The damage to the leg included the knee, and the knee could not be fixed, therefore amputation was the only solution :(

2/20/2007 - Nicholas' foster mom reports: The Surgeon called me to let me know everything went as well as can be expected and rather than taking his leg from the hip, he went along the thigh.  This gives him something to lay down on in the future.  He said that the scar tissue and all the build up inside his leg was pretty bad and he should be able to recover nicely.  He has a lot of stiches, but should do well on his three legs as he was using them pretty much most of the time prior.  They also took x-rays of his good side and he will be able to handle being a tripod with no issues as he has a good hip and knee. Photos - not for the faint of heart.
