Max

Eighty-seven pounds of brains, drive and intensity describes Max, a 15-month-old Rottweiler searching for a new home because he was far too much dog for his busy family. Max is a highly intelligent, keenly focused lad looking for structure, time, attention and appropriate activities to keep his mind and body busy. Max is extremely playful, with an intensity that will not be a fit for every household. Max is motivated by toys and food and will work very hard to get what he wants.

A free spirit type of fellow, Max marches to his own internal drummer, and will present some interesting training challenges to those who do not take the lead from day one. Confident and extroverted, Max is used to making many of his own decisions and can be a bit pushy with people until he has bonded with, respects and trusts his caretakers. When left alone Max is a busy boy, investigating counters and all nooks and crannies. He does have the ability to settle nicely, and should adapt to a new routine in time. While Max shared his most recent home with children, he did not get the exercise and attention he needed.

Given his confident and pushy nature, his placement will be to homes with children over the age of 10. Spending time on a chain in the yard fueled Max's frustration with pedestrians and animals passing by, and as a result, he is easily aroused when he perceives his territory is being invaded. Max has had some exposure to female dogs and is reported to do fairly well with them provided they are of equal size and strength. The previous owner of Max is recommending he not reside with cats. For those who love the challenge of working with a young, brash buck, in the right hands, Max has potential written all over him. Max will be shown to prospective adopters by appointment, as he is not on the main adoption floor. Max is not a dog for first time owners or those interested in ego gratification by virtue of having a Rottweiler. Please contact Bonnie Tuesday-Saturday if you feel you may be a good fit with Max.

Max is available through the Animal Refuge League, 449 Stroudwater St., Westbrook Maine - Phone: 207-854-9771

Kendra

Kendra is a large-framed (95#+) adult rottie girl who has been at the shelter since January 2005. She loves attention and needs her own person to bond with. She is social with other dogs, but should not live with cats. Kendra is strong on lead and would benefit from obedience training with her new owner. She knows sit, but nothing more. Kendra passed rottie rescue's temperament evaluation (5/19/05) and is on the list to come into the program. But Kendra doesn't want to wait another couple of months for this to happen and wants to meet YOU! Kendra is known as 18840 and is living in cage 61 at the Associated Humane Society on Evergreen Avenue in Newark NJ. Please visit her there!

All pets at this shelter are up-to-date on shots and will be altered and micro-chipped upon adoption. We are open 7 days a week from 12pm-5:30pm; for directions call 973-824-7080. There is an adoption donation required. As part of our adoption process, we must have proof of residency. Homeowners must show proof of ownership; landlord approval is required for renters before an adoption can be approved.

Isis

This 4-6 year old lovely lady was surrendered because her people were "moving". Isis is extremely loving and sweet, and can be anyone's best friend. She is social with dogs of all sizes and genders, and appropriate with cats (they *are* fun to chase, however). Her former owners reported that the kids used to "ride" her. That would make sense, as she was about 30 lbs overweight when she came in. Isis is down to a svelte 100 lbs (she should be about 90), is correctly marked and large-framed. She has lovely house manners and rides well in the car. She knows basic commands and will do anything for a tennis ball! What she needs now is YOU!

To learn more about Isis, please visit www.4theloveofdog.org. She is currently in New Hampshire.

Dana

Meet Dana and believe in miracles. This 2 to 3 year old Rottie would not have lived through the winter had it not been for her anonymous good Samaritan who took the time to coax the starving mother into her car. The ER who admitted her called rescue, saying that there was nothing medically wrong with this dog. . .she just needed some warmth, love, and above all FOOD!! This new mother was simply a skeleton walking around in a fur overcoat! Check out the original photo we took of this show-stopper when we rescued her!! Dana has spent this winter basking in TLC and is finally ready to meet her public. She has put on 20 pounds and greets the spring with her new look!! Correctly marked and docked, Dana would appreciate a family where she could reign as the only queen in her castle. Kids over 12 for this girl who is still learning to take treats gently. Cats need not apply to share her space! She is crate trained, housebroken and thrilled, after her life on the street, to live inside!! Come meet Dana who is fostered in northern N.J. Come see our miracle! .Phone her foster Mom, Linda, at (973) 812-9749 or e-mail ComanchesMom1@netzero.net to meet Dana. View more at Paws for Love.
