Hurricane Katrina Update

As we said in our last edition (and for those of you who followed our trip), we did make two journeys to the Gulf Coast in September and October. (complete update) Our first trip had us working with dogs fresh out of the city - loading a 94-dog airlift, feeding, cleaning, evaluating, vaccinating/chipping - you name it. We returned with 21 animals, of which 10 were rottweilers. Our second trip - Michele & Melissa worked with the folks at Winn Dixie and evacuated animals from what was the Ninth Ward - pulling dogs from under collapsed buildings and wading through the toxic muck that was once the Big Easy. That trip brought back 17 animals, of which 5 were rottweilers. Special thanks to local all-breed groups for making room for all of the mixed breed dogs on these trips!
Our agreement with Best Friends Animals Society, the sanctuary where these dogs were being held, requires us to hold these dogs for 90 days to allow for their owners to claim them. Inquiries have been sparse, and our expectations at this point is that they will not be claimed. Only one dog has found her owner.
Of the rottweilers who returned, 8 need to be treated for heartworm. One, Cajun, has serious orthopedic injuries that have now been surgically corrected and he is recovering. He, however, is also heartworm positive. All have had complete blood work ups, thorough examinations, and regular vet visits since their arrival in New England.
Currently five of our dogs have been placed into foster-to-adopt situations, with two more pending. The remainder are looking for permanent families - whether their original families or families in New England. How about you?
Our expenses for the Katrina dogs far outweigh what we can collect in adoption fees. Please consider supporting one of our endeavors to defray these costs:
