~Hurricane Katrina Relief Update~

Seventeen more dogs joined us on this trip - five rotties, a pittie girl, and 11 mixed breeds. All of the mixes are in foster families (and, as of this writing 10/30/05, THREE owners of the mixes have been located). Star, one of the rottie girls in the last group of dogs, is leaving tomorrow to be reunited with her owner, Rosemary, who now lives in Houston.

From the first group of rotties, Sonja gave birth to 8 rottweiler puppies on 10/23. Tammany and Cane are in foster-to-adopt situations, and should their original people not materialize by December, they have found permanent homes. Cajun's surgery has been completed - he is undergoing hydro-therapy to rebuild his muscles after an femoral ostectomy - removal of the femoral head.

Thank you all for your help in achieving our Katrina Relief goals. On September 23, we arrived with the first group of dogs - 21 of them - including 10 rottweilers, 2 pit bulls, and 9 mixed breeds. All of those dogs are safely in foster homes throughout the region.

Melissa and Michele are back in New Orleans and worked yesterday with the Winn Dixie crew to bring 13 dogs safely from their destroyed homes to the Winn Dixie facility. They will be returning next week with 15-20 more dogs from the area. They reported that they were in the 9th Ward, the area just on the other side of the levee that broke. According to Michele, the houses there are on cinder block foundations, and when the water rose, it swept the houses away and they were floating around. When the water receded, the houses landed wherever they were - on top of cars, trees and other houses. The muck is disgusting, and filled with God only knows what. The animals are now living under houses and roofs and whatever they can find. Sadly that area will likely be completely bulldozed, and without being rescued, the animals living under them will be killed.

Let's not forget that this is the worst natural disaster in this country in almost 100 years. The animals still rely on us.

Thank you again for all of your support.

Pit stop at Elyse's on Friday
UPDATE 10/6/05 - Michele and Melissa landed in New Orleans, picked up the Save A Dog van, and headed down to Winn Dixie in New Orleans with a vanload of supplies for the group. After driving through what appeared to be the remnants of a war, with overturned cars, downed power lines, police blocks, etc., they found their way to the parking area of Winn Dixie -- the only thing for blocks with power (generators). There were only two rotties there, and many of the dogs were bound for other rescue groups. That's the good news. This morning (Friday), they went out on a search and rescue mission. In the first hour, they found two living dogs -- and one that wasn't so lucky (a rottie). They are knee deep in contaminated sludge, crawling under houses and into atticks. They understand they're on CNN at 8 p.m. tonight. Watch for more!
