Jitterbug

I need a foster home! 2 year old Jitter was abandoned at a mid-west vet clinic. This adorable girl has been living in an over-crowded situation, and has learned to guard resources. She is a loving girl, knows many commands and tricks, and is appropriate for a family with kids over 12. More about Jitter

Sarge

One of our mid-west rescues, this 6 year old rottie man is big, blocky and handsome. Sarge gets along with other dogs, and loves people. More about Sarge

Sasha

This compact 3 year old rottie girl was fearful in the shelter but blossomed once she was able to settle in. She gets along with all animals thus far. Kids over 10 for Sasha. Sasha and Caesar are good friends, and she is a cute, sweetheart of a girl. Cat safe. More about Sasha

Kayne

A "big lug" at 2-3 years old, Kayne loves attention and loves his toys. He is dog social, but is too excitable around cats to be considered. Kayne is a sweet man who is seeking a forever home. Southern New Hampshire More about Kayne

Death Row Dogs

A Personal Account.

Death Row Rottweiler from NYCIn May of 1998, I went to the Center for Animal Care & Control on 110th in Manhattan for the first time. I walked out with 12 rottweilers, and the person who took me told me that I was the first person who didn't cry walking out of there. Truth be told - it was probably shock, similar to what I had after Hurricane Katrina.

Animal Care and Control of New York City takes in more than 30,000 domestic animals a year. That's roughly 100 a day, from a small stitch of land with over 8 million people. Despite their determination to become No Kill, and their alliance with the Maddies Fund and the Mayor's Alliance, the euthanasia rate is still hard to swallow. And as with almost every area -- the overpopulation is primarily pitbulls and cats.

Death row pitbull from New York CityFor the Love of Dog has always taken dogs from New York City shelters - as a matter of fact, more than half our dogs come from there. It is in ours (and the dogs') best interest if we, the rescue, stay out of politics - especially since we are only voices from the unknown (meaning northern New England).

However, the "To Be Destroyed" list arrives faithfully in our In-Box at 6 p.m. every night and the list haunts us. Last week alone, we took two dogs whose minutes were numbered: Charley and Roxy. The week before that it was another two: Zeus and Addison (FKA Saturday). The week before that: Rocco. We can assure you that these dogs would be dead - and in some cases should have already been dead - when we got to a staff member to pull them. Literally at the last minute.

Death Row rottweiler from New York CityWe are not asking, nor are we begging. We are telling you that, even though euthanasia is almost non-existent (for rottweilers, anyway) in our shelters in northern New England, as rescuers - we consider New York City our "local" shelter. We are telling you that pulling a death row dog encompasses many more resources (as they are usually sick, can't be altered, and need immediate transport) than the dogs we typically bring in from other sources. We ask you to follow - and support - our Manhattan Mutts Project because these dogs DEPEND ON OUR QUICK ACTION.

Dale and Kristine understand fully what our rescue is capable of handling and what our adopters are looking for. However, with mounting medical, boarding and lack of foster homes, we sometimes just can't look at the emails that are sent to us. We need financial help as we did save 5 dogs who went right into boarding (Rocco and Charley had waiting homes) At $10 per day, these 5 dogs are costing us $350 PER WEEK.

January 2012's survivors -- Rocco, Zeus, Addison, Roxy and Charley. Rottie Hennessey and Pittie Chrissy had not made it to the euthanasia list when we pulled them.

Dale's Note

Happy New Year - from the dogs and the volunteers of the rescue. The many adoptions at the very end of 2011 and early into 2012, has afforded us the ability to take in 13 rotties and 5 pitties this month! Almost a whole turn of available dogs! And lucky they are.

Our Annual Appeal, as well as our Holiday Calendar Raffle were successful again this year - and we thank you all for your support of the rotties and pitties at year end. We know that a lot of you are feeling the pinches of the economy, and are grateful for all that you give the dogs.

Many of our rotties have come from Miami and Ohio lately - and the Miami dogs especially have been grateful for the lack of snowfall this season. Somehow I think they'll figure it out soon enough - we're giving them practice on the Ashuelot Rail Trail.

Our Mid-West Mission dogs are all doing well - Taz is living his life out happily at Mukota Kennel, although he does have some older medical issues that need to be addressed -- read his story here. Jitter will receive gold bead implants for some degeneration, and at her age, the prognosis is very very good! Sarge is waiting, in foster care, for a forever home. I can't imagine why he's being passed by. The Ohio dogs - Laverne, Shirley, Chloe and Joy are all waiting to meet "the one". Wyatt and Logan were both adopted! Our Mid-West program will continue as we are asked!

We have our Friends & Family BBQ and Romp for Rotties and Pitties scheduled for June 3 from noon to 4 p.m. at Hopkinton State Park in Massachusetts. Please mark your calendar cause we can't wait to see you all!

Lastly, we are going to start working on a redesign of our site. If there's something you're looking for and can't find; something you love or hate; or just comments, please let us know... Thank you for all that you do for the dogs!
