Yikes... Ike

Not a repeat of Katrina (thank goodness), but our relief efforts are needed!

You can't turn the news on without seeing images of Galveston and Houston and the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.  Emergency response is more organized for pet owners, and while not everyone heeded the warnings to "get outta Dodge", the evacuation scene was familiar to many Gulf Coast residents.

For the Love of Dog has been taking Gulf Coast dogs since before Katrina. The group's volunteers did several stints in New Orleans and Mississippi in 2005 and earliy 2006 in the aftermath of that storm. We placed something like 72 Katrina dogs (sorry, I really did lose count) during our Katrina relief efforts.

In the last year, many of our dogs have come from the Galveston TX area, and last week, we evacuated 6 dogs knowing that Ike was headed toward them.

We have two more coming this weekend and four more coming next week. We are also on call for Best Friends Animal Society in Utah for relief and our TX contact (still without power) is working hard to assist with relief efforts as well.

We often ask for money, and won't turn it away if it's offered (and your donation is tax deductable). But what we really need is FOSTER HOMES -- for the dogs in boarding currently and for the dogs coming in this week, next week and after that.

If you are an approved adopter, just drop me an email if you can foster. If you are interested in fostering and you're now to our realm, please fill out a foster application.

The dogs need you - Help us to help them. So far, Mischke, Mario, Bella, Millie, Daphne & Sebastian thank you. Coming in are Bonita, Crystal, Luigi, Raven, Annie and Rose.

Thank you!

Our Romp for Rotties & Pitties and our 4th Annual Friends & Family BBQ were a huge success - and Hanna held off until we had already packed up and were on our way home.

To all who made the trek - thank you. And to all who supported the Romp, we are grateful for your support. We raised almost $9000 at the event!

What you can do...

Make a Donation or Sponsor a Dog

For the Love of Dog is a tax exempt 501c3 organization and donations are tax deductable.

Since 1998, I have been taking dogs from the Center for Animal Care & Control in New York City. In 2005, we moved 25 dogs into permanent homes from the city. In 2006, we moved 52 dogs into permanent homes from the city. The NYCACC takes in all stray and city impound dogs as well as owner turn ins and averages 3000 animals a month. Owners are allowed 72 hours to reclaim their dog, or the dog becomes available for adoption or may be euthanized. To get these dogs to safety, we need to move them to boarding space. DISCOUNTED boarding space in New York is $25/day. That gets expensive quickly and we need HELP  with it.

~We take several dogs every week. Your continued support is needed. ~
