The Locking Jaw MythReprinted from the Pit Bull Rescue Central web site
This is a very common myth, but it is nothing more than an urban legend. Pit bulls are just another member of the canine species and have the same jaw structure as any other dog. If they had a special enzyme or other physical mechanism that allowed them to lock their jaws, then we would have to reclassify them as a different species. A closely related myth is the notion that pit bulls possess an exceptionally high “bite pressure” and thus do more damage when they bite. There is no evidence to substantiate this claim. In 2005, Dr. Brady Barr of National Geographic found that pit bulls’ bite pressure is no higher than other dog breeds and lower than German Shepherds and Rottweilers. None of these dogs had a bite pressure even close to the level erroneously ascribed to pit bulls. If you encounter a creature with a bite pressure exceeding 1000 psi., you have encountered a hyena, a snapping turtle, a crocodile, or some other wild animal—not a dog. “Special” behaviors typically attributed to pit bulls—such as determination, prey drive, grabbing and shaking, or tenacity—are, more accurately, terrier behavior. Physiologically, pit bulls are no different from other dogs. Debunking more Pitbull Myths -- and learning a few things that you probably didn't know
Foster a DogWe currently have FIVE pitties in boarding. If you can foster one of the wonderful dogs in our program, please Email us or fill out a foster application If you can't foster, can you sponsor a kennel run? $70 buys a kennel run for a week. All of these dogs thank you. Remember that your donation IS tax deductable.
Editor's NoteLast month has been an absolute whirlwind for for the rescue. On September 30, we were asked to participate in a mission to move 29 rottweilers from an overcrowded rescue in Nebraska. Volunteers scrambled to plan the operation, rent a second van, come up with 22 crates, get the participating volunteers in sync... in six days. In the end, 29 dogs (of which 26 were rottweilers) made it safely to other rescues in Michigan, New York, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Add to that, our Friends & Family / Romp for Rotties & Pitties event on Oct 2 that raised almost $7000 for the dogs! It was great to see all of the adopted pitties and rotties out, and all on their very best behavior! What a wonderful crew of great dogs! We have just launched our first ever Holiday Calendar Raffle -- 31 Days, 31 Prizes. One prize for each day of the month in December. We had such generous donations of everything from an iPad and 42" flat screen television to gift cards, lift tickets, a weekend getaway, jewelry and so much more. Tickets are available in a book of 5 (yes, you can win more than once) for $25 and the drawing will be held on Nov 27. A prize for you or a gift for someone on your list! Check out the calendar and buy tickets here. Speaking of November 27... (I told you we are busy!) -- we have our second Unos Dough Raising that day in Concord, NH. It's Turkey Day weekend, Unos is right down the road from the shopping center, and minutes from the Tilton Outlets! Stop for lunch, dinner, or take out on your way to getting your holiday shopping done and Unos donates 20% of your purchase to the dogs! And if you are lucky... you'll leave with a winning raffle prize! Bring your voucher! And to all of this, Kristine enjoyed a vacation in Vegas - although she hasn't confirmed if her winnings will build the dogs a new kennel. Pending that, however, Sadie, Autumn, Nala, DJ and True all need foster homes! Don't let them spend the holidays in boarding...
