Every rescue celebrates the moment a dog gets approved for adoption. It means someone connected with them, imagined them as part of their family, and offered hope for a forever home. But sometimes, after an application is approved and a commitment is made, the adoption simply never happens.
We completely understand that life changes. Situations come up. People realize they may not be ready after all. That honesty is important, and we would always rather someone step back than move forward uncertain.
But we also want to gently share the impact that these situations can have behind the scenes.
When a dog is marked as “pending” or “adopted,” we often stop accepting applications and inquiries for them. Potential adopters move on to other rescues. Foster homes begin preparing for the transition. Transport plans may be arranged. In many cases, another dog who urgently needs placement cannot come into rescue because the space is being held for the committed adoption.
For dogs still sitting in overcrowded shelters, every available foster space matters. Every delay can mean another dog has to wait longer for safety.
Our volunteers and fosters also invest an incredible amount of time coordinating applications, references, meet-and-greets, medical records, scheduling, and communication. When an approved adoption suddenly disappears without follow-through, it can be discouraging for the people working tirelessly to save lives.
We know many adopters apply to multiple rescues, and we understand why. Adoption can be emotional and competitive. But we kindly ask that applicants consider where they truly are in the process before committing to a specific dog. If you are still unsure, that is okay. If you need more time, that is okay too. Honest communication helps us continue helping as many dogs as possible.
At the end of the day, everyone involved wants the same thing: safe, loving, forever homes for these animals.
So if circumstances change, please just tell us. There is no judgment. Transparency and communication allow us to quickly reopen applications, support our fosters, and help another dog in need.
